Products We Love

I've been meaning to blog about this racer back tank from SQN Sport for months. I purchased the tank at their Flagship Sun Valley store in April and have since bought another one. I wear it to workout, with shorts, jeans, etc. It made its C&C debut yesterday in my "What I Wore" post.

SQN was founded in Sun Valley and just recently opened a store in Aspen, Colorado. You can also buy their products online. I HIGHLY recommend adding this tank to your collection. The high neck and narrow cut of the arm holes are extremely flattering. I get so many compliments on this tank. It has become a staple in my closet, and should be one in yours too!

Sun, Sun Summer

As you know from our blogging hiatus, we spent last week in Sun Valley. It was the perfect week of hiking, swimming, paddle boarding visiting friends and enjoying life in the mountains. I took with me one of my favorite summer pieces, my Land's End Swim Tee Rash Guard. I gave one to Katie last year as a gift, and both of us love them. It's the perfect way to stay cool and protected from the sun.

So I thought I would share it with you. Added bonus, they are currently only sale!

Consign Design

I spent two weeks in Sun Valley over the holidays, and as all of you know, a trip to Sun Valley is not complete without a visit to Consign Design. As usual, it was a designer gold mine.

There were two INCREDIBLE Victoria Beckham dresses, and my friend SB took one home with her. Doesn't she look incredible in that dress? Hello barre3 booty! And, she only paid $85 for it (the dress that is. The booty...well, that takes more time, money and hard work)!

There were so many other things I wanted to take home with me.
1) bronze chain link necklace ($85) 2) Tortoise patent Christian Louboutin heels ($145)...I wish I could have squeezed my 38.5 size feet into these 36.5 shoes. 3) Dolce Vita animal print booties
4) DVF printed blouse

I passed up a pair of fabulous Kate Spade black suede platform pumps and some cute studded Steve Madden smoking slippers as well.

But worry not, I didn't leave empty handed....I came home with this amazing jacket. If you can't quite see the label, its a D&G (Dolce and Gabbana) Lambskin black leather jacket, and it's FABULOUS. It's the softest most amazing leather.

What is even more incredible was the $195 price tag. The Mini Fashionista bought it for me as a Christmas gift (i.e. she signed the credit card receipt). Wasn't that generous of her? I can't wait to wear it, so stay tuned for a "What I Wore" post soon.

Keeping it Real

On Saturday I accomplished a goal that I set out to achieve one year ago, and I feel proud, really proud!

Let me start at the beginning.

About 5 years ago I started XC skiing, just for fun. I was a recreational skier. At the same time my +1 became addicted to the sport and started racing. You may remember that last year we traveled to Italy for him to compete (post here).

Last year, after watching him compete for the 4th time in the Boulder Mountain Tour, a 32K XC skate race in Sun Valley, Idaho, I decided maybe I should give it a try. So, I made a Facebook declaration...and once it's on Facebook, there's no going back.

My training began at Thanksgiving in Bend, OR, and it continued on snow in Sun Valley at Christmas. When not on snow I've tried to roller ski regularly (the dryland form of XC skiing), but it's not the same as skiing on snow. In case you are wondering what roller skiing looks like, here it is...skinny "skis", no breaks and unforgiving pavement. I much prefer the snow, and so do my knees and elbows (a few weeks ago I had a nasty crash).

Just over a week ago, I competed in my first ever race, a 5K race at Mt. Bachelor. I was able to "test" my fitness and see what it was like to ski with a group of women. It was a short race but great preparation for my big race, the Boulder Mountain Tour.

Saturday was the big day. The Boulder is a huge event, over 600 skiers participated this year, including some of the top skiers in the country. I somehow was able to "beg" my way into the Women's Elite Wave, which placed me amongst the top 40+ women in the race. Talk about pressure. I was nervous about my placement, but optimistic I could deliver! This is what the start of the race looks like. It is called a "mass start."

I woke up on Saturday feeling tired, sore and sluggish...not what any athlete hopes to feel like on race day, but I knew I would have to power through. Due to lack of snow, the race course was altered slightly making it not just a 32K race but a 34K race. What's 2 more kilometers?

Despite a slow start, I skied strong.

I skied into the race and found my groove. I skied within myself and my abilities and finished with every ounce of effort I had left in me after 34K....okay maybe I had a little left, but not much! I skied the 34.16K in 1:41:16.

And the prize waiting for me at the finish was priceless, the Mini Fashionista. Nothing is greater than hearing my favorite little voice say "go mommy, go!"

The icing on the cake, I got 3rd place in my age category. I finished 30th out of 236 women and 142nd out of 620 total skiers.

My results far exceeded my expectations. As I said, I am feeling proud, really proud. This may come as a surprise, but despite being a competitive ski racer in high school and college, I have NEVER been on a podium, NEVER! This was my first medal, EVER!

I spent my time as a competitive ski racer working my butt off to be what was considered a "good skier." Despite an incredible level of commitment and initiative, I was never at the top. I grew up among some of the most skilled athletes in the country, and it was easy to feel like I lacked athletic ability.

Now in my 30's I realize that I do have what it takes to be competitive. Maybe I was just in the wrong sport. What I have learned is that it's never too late to try something new, to commit yourself and to succeed.

Whatever your goal might be, I say "go for it!" If I can do it, so can you. Whatever your goal is...be it losing weight, running a 5K, climbing Mt. Hood or getting yourself to the gym 5 days a week.

Set a goal. Commit. Be proud, really proud!

Christmas at Consign Design

No trip to Sun Valley is complete without a visit to Consign Design, and my Christmas from Consign Design was nothing short of amazing!

First let me lament about the shoes that I left behind…these black suede booties with braided leather trim were fantastic…but a 1/2 size too big. Such a bummer!

I scored this fantastic Ralph Lauren sweater for only $50! I've already worn it a handful of times. Totally LOVE!

This Elie Tahari Sateen Coat had to go home with me! The gigantic collar and gathered hemline were just too much to pass up. The pictures do it no justice!

And last but not least, this arrived under the Christmas tree. Apparently Santa shops at Consign Design too (a.k.a my amazing mom). Pinch me!

Products We Love

Our trip on the Salmon River started and ended in Sun Valley. With two of my fellow fashionista (and C&C readers) along for the adventure, I thought I owed them a little bit of retail therapy before dragging them out into the wild.

After a successful stop at Consign Design, we popped in to the Brass Ranch at the Sun Valley Resort. Shortly thereafter, we all walked out with these fabulous leather and gold bracelets. It was pure luck that they had all three of our letters....unfortunately there was no "K". Sorry Katie! :(

Good news is that Katie, and the rest of you, can order one online! The bracelets are made by designer Lisa Stewart .

Here are a few other pieces from her collection that I wouldn't mind adding to my own jewelry collection. All are priced reasonably around $100!

All of these pieces would make a lovely gift for Mother's Day, a birthday, graduation present, etc....or a I love myself present, which you all deserve!

Mason Cakes

There aren't many things I enjoy more in life than dessert; cake, cookies, cobblers, cupcakes...you name it, I like it! When my friend Shelly told me about her new business venture, Mason Cakes, I was so excited for her, and I was even more excited to eat her fabulous creations.

Mason Cakes are scrumptious little cakes in jars! Don't they look amazing?

All of her recipes have been handed down from her grandmother, mother, great-grandmother, and even some from her father. Shelly strives to use local, natural, and organically produced ingredients in all of her cakes.

The really exciting thing is that you don't have to live in Sun Valley to enjoy these amazing cakes. You can order them online! And, what's even more fantastic is that Shelly is giving away 3 Mason Cakes each to 3 lucky C&C readers!

Enter below for the chance to win the 3 cakes of your choice! With cakes like Red Velvet, Coconut Dream and Birthday Cake you can't go wrong...I wish I could enter my own giveaway! You have until Sunday to enter, and we will announce the winner on Monday!

It Happened in Sun Valley

It has been a little crazy since we got back from Sun Valley, so I hadn't gotten the chance to post a recap from our week at home in Idaho until now. It was PERFECT spring weather.

We skied and hiked.

And golfed (Regan and the mini got there just in time for the last hole. She's clearly an athlete in the making).

Our trip was centered around the Janss Pro Am Classic, a fundraiser for the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation - who Regan and I skied for as kids. This year's theme was "Let the Games Begin," so we went to our go-to game...Angry Birds. I hadn't raced in 12 years, and let me tell you, it wasn't easy with a giant bird head.

And, of course, the highlight of the trip was being with the mini and Regan. I love these girls.

Mountain Gals

As you probably read, we spent last week in Sun Valley. There wasn't really anything too exciting about our trip...just lots of skiing, relaxing and good mountain air. Here are a few photos to sum up the week!

The scenery doesn't get any better!

My (mostly) self taken photos while alpine and Nordic skiing.

The Mini Fashionista went skiing on Dollar Mountain for the first time! I think she liked the "magic carpet" as much as she liked skiing down!

Stay tuned in the coming weeks for more winter wonderland photos from Italy and Austria! Ciao!

28 to Great Update- Finding Balance

Twenty eight days have come and gone, and the barre3 challenge is officially over. It's a good thing because I leave for Europe on Friday, and I am pretty sure they live off bread, wine, cheese and pasta in Italy. God Bless the Italians! I am coming for you and all of your delicious gluten, dairy and alcohol products! As they say, "when in Rome"! (side note, I am not going to Rome)

As you know from last week's post, I spent the week in Sun Valley. Going into the final week of the challenge, my goal was to do the best I could to stick the "rules", but I knew it would be difficult. I mean, who could resist a Bowl of Soul and raspberry muffin from Java? Not this girl!

This final week for me was a test of the "28 to Great" principles in the real world! And here is what I concluded, and what I really already knew, life is all about BALANCE (it's no coincidence that balance is a key principle of the barre3 practice), and overall I am doing pretty well!

Each day you are faced with a variety of choices; choices about what you eat, how much you exercise, how much you sleep, how much you work, etc. If 80% of the time you make healthy, balanced choices and 20% you eat chocolate, drink wine, sit on the couch and watch a movie, then I believe you have achieved a healthy balance in your life. Some days call for tea and some days call for coffee. Sometimes a salad satisfies your hunger and sometimes it takes a cheeseburger. One day you might exercise for 2 hours and the next day not at all. Everything in moderation.

As I talked about last Tuesday, the constant quest for perfection can be exhausting. While the premise of the challenge was not "28 to perfect", it is easy to convince yourself that if you don't follow the "rules" you are a failure. It is extremely common for women to obsess over being the perfect healthy eating, lean and mean exercising machine (Gwyneth Paltrow's blog GOOP could make us all feel lazy and unhealthy).  But I say, if you even signed up for this challenge and made small efforts to better yourself and improve your health, then you've done well.

I will honestly say that participating in the challenge was a lot of work. I spent time getting in more workouts, hunting down obscure cooking items, prepping and cooking food and planning out how I would execute the challenge principles in my daily life. There were aspects of it that I found well worth the extra efforts, but others were not, i.e when my husband leaves town for 2 days I will drink wine! There is no substitute!

Life is all about balance, and in my final week I achieved just that. I did a few barre3 online workouts, I went alpine and XC skiing nearly every day and I worked out with my mom at the gym. On the opposite side of the spectrum, I drank hot chocolate with whipped cream, I ate pancakes, cookies and pizza and drank wine...even at lunch (GASP)!

On Friday I will be getting on a plane bound for Austria and Italy and again will do my best to balance healthy choices with indulgence! I will definitely be using barre3 online to get in some workouts while I am away. I promise to post updates from across the pond when I have a chance!

In the mean time, don't forget you can use the code "15barre3CC" to get a 15 free trial of barre3 online (expires February 8th).

What I Wore

For New Year's Eve we celebrated in style with friends at the Lodge Dining Room in Sun Valley. I love any reason to get dressed up. We were in bed well before the clock struck midnight, but it was a great time nonetheless.

Here are a few photos of what I wore. I didn't end up "Renting the Runway. Instead I shopped in my own closet (and my mom's).

1) Chain link bracelet (borrowed from my mom, I think it is Michael Kors), Nixon Camden rose gold watch, a Christmas gift from my +1.
2) Fur stole (my great grandmother's) and Phillip Lim 3.1 black dress purchased at Seams to Fit for an incredible $99 (last seen here).
3) My current favorite hair style, a sock bun! Stay tuned for a sock bun tutorial and video blog.
4) ASOS polka dot tights and Vince Camuto Zella heels.

And one last photo of me and my +1!

Happy New Year!

Planning Ahead

We will be spending New Year's Eve in Sun Valley with our good friends. None of us have ever really "done it up" on New Year's (I know...we're pretty lame), so we will be leaving our little people at home for the night and hitting the town. We've made reservations at The Lodge Dining Room at the Sun Valley Resort for a night of dinner and dancing, totally old school style!

So the big question, what to wear? As always, Rent The Runway is my go-to! Here are the dresses I am considering?

Badgley Mischka Fifth Avenue Show Stopper ($75 rental)

Milly Sienna Sequin Stripe Dress (Rental $60)

Shoshanna Primary Lace Dress (Rental $65)

And my front runner....the Tibi Confetti Sequins Dress (Rental $100)

Which is your favorite?
